Shawna Cunha Registered Provisional Psychologist P8128
Shawna Cunha has a strong foundation in teaching, having spent over 18 years as a middle school educator. Her extensive experience working with adolescents and their families has provided her with a deep understanding of developmental, social, and emotional challenges, which she now integrates into her work as a provisional psychologist. Shawna holds a Master of Arts in Counselling Psychotherapy from Yorkville University and a Master’s in Education from the University of Calgary. This combination of academic training and professional experience supports her client-centred, strengths-based, and trauma-informed approach to therapy.
Shawna works with adolescents and adults navigating a variety of challenges, including anxiety, depression, emotional regulation, and life transitions. She has a particular interest in supporting individuals during critical periods of change, such as the transition from adolescence to adulthood, from high school to university, or entering the workforce. By addressing the unique pressures of these milestones, she helps clients build resilience and develop the skills needed to thrive during life’s pivotal moments.
In her practice, Shawna incorporates evidence-based modalities, including Cognitive Behavioural Therapy, Dialectical Behaviour Therapy, and Somatic Therapy. She also draws on holistic practices like mindfulness, yoga, and breathing exercises to enhance well-being and create a sense of balance. Her collaborative and empathetic approach ensures that clients feel supported as they explore their challenges, uncover their strengths, and work toward achieving their goals.
Shawna has additional training in trauma, mindfulness practices, and holistic approaches to mental health. She values the healing power of nature and animals and integrates these elements into her work whenever possible.
In her free time, Shawna enjoys spending time outdoors with her family, exploring nature, and volunteering with animal rescue organizations.
